MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow tweeted a jab at Secretary of State Rex Tillerson when his former company, Exxon Mobil, requested a waiver from sanctions from the Trump administration so they can resume a joint partnership in the Black Sea with Rosneft, Russia’s state-run oil company.
Her tweet: “Ka-ching! Payout time.”
Maddow said on Wednesday’s TRMS, “That deal Rex Tillerson hammered out in 2012 with Russia is thought to be the biggest oil deal, ever. Vladimir Putin said at the time it was likely to be a 5 hundred billion dollar deal.” She continued, “The following year, 2013, Putin bestowed upon Rex Tillerson ‘The Order of Friendship,’ Russia’s highest award given to a non-Russian citizen.”
In 2014, Rosneft announced the oil venture with Exxon in the Black Sea had the potential to produce 90 billion barrels of oil – much more than Saudi Arabia’s largest oil fields.
The Wall Street Journal reported that, in recent months, Exxon asked the Treasury Department for permission to drill alongside Rosneft – which is currently banned by U.S sanctions; but according to WSJ, it remains unclear whether or not the request to resume the oil venture came before or after Tillerson’s confirmation.
In his confirmation hearings, a number of senators voiced concern over Tillerson’s business and personal relationship with Putin. Tillerson promised to recuse himself from anything having to do with Exxon Mobil in his first two years as Secretary of State.
Maddow has been closely following the Trump administration’s ties to Russia, and her tweet suggests she believes lifting those sanctions will result in a huge payout for Tillerson.
